2017 Oscar Nominee Inspired Fashion

February 24, 2017 Rebecca Turner
2017 Oscar Inspired Fashion

It's that time of year again!  Time for the Oscars!  I'm quite a movie fan, so every year when the Oscar nominations are announced, I make a list and try to see every nominated film. This year, I've seen all of the Best Picture nominees within a 10 day span (I have the last two schedule for this weekend). It was a lot of seeing the same trailer over and over and eating entirely too much popcorn. While I anxiously wait to see if my favorites win on Sunday, I created a few looks inspired by the 2017 nominees.

Hacksaw Ridge is based on the true story of Desmond T. Doss who saved 75 men in Okinawa without using a weapon. It was a very interesting and inspiring movie despite being over two hours of mostly explosions and blood. My look features army green inspired by the soldiers uniforms and leather accents.  While these men wouldn't have worn jewelry, I added our Studded Leather Wrap Bracelet and Golden Honeycomb Ring for a few touches of gold.

Lion was one of my favorites for the year. Inspired by the true story of a young Indian boy who gets separated from his brother at a train station and later adopted by an Australian family, it made me long to visit India. The look I complied brings together the beauty of traditional Indian clothing, while our Sunset Vista Drop Earrings and Sunset Vista Two-Row Convertible Necklace reminded me of the colors of the Indian landscape.

I'm a fan of any movie with Jeff Bridges, and Hell or High Water was no exception. Bridges brings out his typical cowboy swagger in this awesome cops vs robbers showdown. My looks features a lot of denim with turquoise accents from our Turkish Delight Convertible Necklace Set and Turquoise Stud Earrings.

Hidden Figures is a must-see. Based on the true story of the African-American women working at NASA to launch John Glenn into orbit, this movie is full of humor and girl-power. I'm always a big fan of 60s-style clothing so this look was my favorite to compile.  I added our Heirloom Pearl Deco Necklace and Heirloom Pearl + Pavé Stud Earrings because pearls were all the women were allowed to wear while at work.

La La Land was my very favorite for the year. You can't go wrong with Ryan Gosling singing and dancing. The movie was full of bright colors and classic Hollywood looks. I love Emma Stone's bright yellow dress when she first dances with Ryan Gosling's character and the red handbag she carries around in much of the movie. I added our Souviens Shooting Star Earrings and Starburst Petite Pendant Necklace for a touch of bling.

Manchester By The Sea was just sad, sad, sad from beginning to end. If you want to cry for two hours non-stop with no reprieve, this is the movie for you. My look features the cold weather clothing typical of the North East setting and small touches of simple jewelry with our Tidal Stackable Rings and Pavé Curved Bar Necklace.

Fences.jpg

Fences had very strong performances from Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, but not much else. Based on a play by the same name, Fences was two hours of the main characters talking, yelling, and crying in one setting. This was probably more moving as a stage play. Through the majority of the movie, Viola Davis' character wore the same variation on a gingham dress. The only jewelry she wore was a gold cross, but I added our Parisian Belle Pendant Necklace and Parisian Belle Convertible Stud Earrings to complement the peach sweater.

I still need to see Moonlight and Arrival this weekend before I've seen all nine nominated films, but I doubt either of them will top La La Land for Best Picture, in my opinion.

Have you seen any of the nominated films this year?  Which one was your favorite?  What look to you like the most?

Barbie Gets A Dose Of Reality

January 20, 2017 Rebecca Turner
Barbie Gets A Dose Of Reality

I grew up in Barbie World.  I had the Barbie house, Corvette, RV, airplane, cruise ship, and a horse for Barbie to ride that came complete with its own stable. I even had a rug on my bedroom floor that had Barbie rooms outlined on it where I could place all of Barbie’s furniture and miniature accessories. My mother gave me her Barbies and vintage handmade clothes in addition to buying me my own collection of Barbies and the latest fashions for them to wear. This added up to a multitude of dolls fighting to have a relationship with my one Ken doll.

I never looked at Barbie as a physical role model, but I also didn't grow up in an era where social media was the norm. Now that I'm at an age where my friends are having daughters of their own, I understand how problematic it can be for little girls to idolize a toy that projects the reality of being 6 feet tall and having an 18in waist.  It's just not realistic. I want my future daughter to play with toys that don't make her think that if she doesn't have a thigh gap there is something wrong with her.

Which was why I was so excited to hear that Barbie was getting real. She's now available in petite, curvy, and tall models, in addition to the original silhouette. And while Barbie (and toys in general) have a way to go before all children feel represented by their toys, this is a step in the right direction.

Beauty does not come from just being tall and skinny. Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors and should be represented as such in our children's toys. If children saw a vast diversity in their toys from a young age, wouldn't they come to accept the diversity of people around them?

Barbie taught girls that they can be anything that they want to be. We can be doctors, astronauts, teachers, or stay-at-home mom's. I just hope that Barbies will also teach our future generations that who we are are has less to with how tall and skinny we are, but how we treat others.

How do you feel about the new Barbies? Are you happy they are changing the body type or do you prefer the original Barbie?
